November 8, 2010

My Birthday was good, my comp and a couple other elders I know took me out for breakfast which was nice and ya, your package made it alright thanks for the shirt and ties and CD they are all awesome. This week was the last week of the transfer and nothing much happened, I am not getting transferred but my comp is which is kinda a bummer. Of the 8 transfers I been out I've had 7 comps one every transfer, so I'm getting to know quite a few different people. All in all though it was a good week, this week though we should have two baptisms thought which is awesome one is for an older lady 77 yrs old who is all messed up with arthritis and stuff she is way funny though and like the sweetest old lady ya could meet. her name is Sister Bartolini and the second one is Mary Florence she is not as old as Sister Bartolini and she is awesome as well she has a 40 something years old son that lives with her that thinks he has been taken over by Jesus it is a really weird situation with him, on Thursday we are going over to go give him a blessing to maybe cast out whatever is tormenting him. But anyway it will be interesting. Anyways I love and miss ya all a ton, be careful back there I'm not there to pick ya up lol, jk, god bless.

The Baptisms are set for the 6th and the 13th of this month. Well as far as this week it was a slow one as far as work goes. we moved out of our apartment and into a members home so we have been trying to get everything moved and cleaned up in the old place and get settled down in the new one. So we just went and visited less activities and the investigators we already have, didn't get any new ones but its still way awesome watching how they accept the gospel and teachings of Christ. This week one of our investigators Alex is going to go visit his Catholic Priest about being baptized into the LDS church his mom set it up so we are hoping and praying that it all goes well and the Priest doesn't like do something to not make him want to be baptized Alex has come a long ways too. I love ya all and miss ya.

Oct 25.2010

Well this past week was awesome we set 4 baptismal dates, one with Alex Ponze-Sanchez he is Mexican and has very strong Catholic roots but he is starting to let go of them and is willing to too, which is sweet he is a way funny guy too. He likes to go off subject a lot and go on about cake or painting and some random stuff, its kinda funny. Another one is with Roberto Rodrigeze we he speaks fluent English but his wife doesn't she speaks mainly Spanish she can understand English well enough and can say a few things but we are going to give them over to our roommates the Spanish elders that would be better for them. The other one her name is Mary she is in her 60's somewhere the awesome thing about her is she found us we didn't find her last Sunday she just walked into sacrament meeting and wanted to know more about church and so we taught her and have a date it was pretty sweet. The last one is a 77 year old lady who her health is degrading so she is on her way in the next year or two. Her name is Sister Bartolini she is awesome too she understand everything and is just awesome she just one of those funny old people. lol. I love ya all tons keep up the good work make sure to do your home and visiting teaching the best way to do missionary work is that of the members. Live the gospel, testify of the gospel. Fasefua.

October 18,2010

Hey Mom
This last Saturday we were able to go down to the LA Visitor Center with an investigator it was way awesome that place is so cool, we had a lot of fun and it was a really good experience for Alex ( our investigator) that he was able to come with us he is a way cool and funny guy. Also last Monday, p-day, my comp and I after doing emails and all that stuff we went to the Chevrolet and GMC dealership and we test drove some of the new Camaros and some of GM's trucks it was way fun. Also this last week we tracted out a family the Dad's name is Roberto we were outside his house and my Zone Leader had to make a phone call, we where on exchanges, and while he was doing that Roberto came out to go somewhere and he came up to us and asked if we were the missionaries and if we could come back some time cause he had some questions for us so we set up another time and went back and he's been looking for a church and all his questions and views are right on. He's golden so he will be being baptized in a couple of weeks once he and his family comes to church. Also either this week or more likely next week actually an older sister Sister Bartolini she has a lot of health issues and she can't get around to well so we are going to baptize her in her swimming pool at the place she stays at it's a old people complex so that's going to be interesting. Well that's about it for me, I love my Job lol, love and miss ya all.

October 11, 2010

Well I guess to start this one off on Saturday my companion and I drove up to the other side of the mission back to Barstow for Mariah's baptism it went well it was a lot of fun. As for my companion his name is Elder J Spencer Brewer he is from Salt Lake City, ya know the company that makes all the CTR rings and stuff, his Dad is the President of that company. He has been out for about 4 months but he might have to go home early due to he needs surgery on his shoulder and possibly his knee so we are hoping that won't happen but it's all up to the Lord, he is way cool. I like the new area the members are way cool and we got some awesome investigators we are teaching we have already set a date with one for the 6th of November but she actually lives in Fontana not here in Ontario so we need to figure out what we are going to do, she might move over here cause she spends all day everyday over here cause her kids go to school over here and she is looking to get a job as well. The only down side is the Ward Mission leader there are some difficult people to deal with, but o well.
Well I love ya all lots.

October 4, 2010

Well it is cooler than Barstow, then again anywhere you go is cooler than Barstow. I got transferred down to Ontario where I'll be for sometime. If everything goes well this month on the 16th my companion Elder Brewer (who is from Salt Lake, he went to East High that is where they filmed High School Musical) and I will have the opportunity to go down to the LA Temple and check out their new Visitor Center with some investigators and members of the ward, it's going to be awesome. The area I'm in has slowed down a little bit right before I got here so we are doing a bit of finding. The Ward is one of the better ones, the ward mission leader and the ward is pretty good a t getting us people to teach this is going to be a good few months I'm way excited. Be sure and read Pres Monson talk next month in the Ensign the talk about gratitude ya got to be thankful for the things that ya got for the things that the Lord has blessed us with he also talked about optimism. Pres U's talk was really good as well, his was on pride and how we should be proud of ourselves our families and our religion but that we shouldn't let ourselves get prideful, we should be proud of who we are and about what we do but humble. Well that's all remember always put the Lord first in all that ya do and everything will be alright.

Sept 27

Well we didn't have a lot to do this week, we did calling to check up on several them Mariah is doing awesome though she is so ready to be baptized once she gets off of probation which will be after Stake Conference which is going to be sweet. Yesterday we met with a sorta less active family the mother is less active but the kids there are 4 girls and 1 boy they are more active, the father is just on his way from Iraq so I don't know how active he is but we went over to there place to play a scripture chase game. with them it was way fun. Well also I'm being transferred this week so I'll let ya know next time on where I'm at. So until then Love ya all.

Sept 20

Well I think Dad's cold must have found its way to Barstow. This week wasn't such a good one first we spent all day Monday and Tuesday in Victorville cause we had a blown casket in the car and the AP's drove us back up Tuesday so we haven't had a car at all this week. Then our apartment got sick so that held us up for a bit too. When we went out to dinner I got a flat tire on my bike so it was a kind of slow week. But on the bright side our investigator Mariha came to church which is awesome she is coming along so fast it's sweet, we can't baptize her though until she gets off of probation (for fighting) which she will be by the end of this month or the beginning of next so that's good. Besides that we weren't able to do to much with no car and being sick and all, but this week will be better it's going to be awesome. And about the stuff I sent last week, our member, one of them is crazy about it and about stuff that could happen she has all these chars and info and stuff and going over them, reading and looking at them kind of makes ya think, that we know that the worst is not yet over ant that things are only going to get worse so we just gotta do what we can with what we have and put a smile on our faces cause hey, we are alive ain't we and that's reason enough to smile. We are alive and the Lord is on our side ant that's good enough for me. I love and miss ya'all tons

Sept 13

This letter really got the best of me, I will have to admit it did scare me a little, and I have been pondering things for the last week. I will post most of it here and I hope it makes you think of things a little too.

Well this was a good week we got a new investigator his name is Joseph Clark he's a black man, he's looking for religion trying to find something better in life and well, boom, here we are!!!!! We taught him about the restoration which went really quite well and we will be going back on Wed. I don't know if Mandy's told ya but they are changing the lessons again and how we teach, we are going old school with it. We teach the doctrine of Christ and then about receiving Revelations through prayer, reading the Book of Mormon and going to church and everything is how the spirit directs. Kind of like the apostles of the New Testament is more like how they want us to be teaching they won't start teaching it tell May at the MTC so we practice up on it till then cause once they come out with it they won't know the Preach My Gospel lessons anymore so its kind of neat. O and Mom make sure you keep up on the food storage be sure and have a years supply, and have good winter gear (such as a winter tent and ect.) and see if Dad can go buy some ammo for the guns, cause things are going to get worse before they get better and we need to be prepared. Check up on those things and check up on others and make sure that they have their food storage set up. I love ya all tons

Sept 6th 2010

First of all I asked him about the Elder that was hurt in the bike accident.

Both the bike and the Elder are both okay. Our meetings with Mariah are going really well she has been clean from smoking and drinking for a couple weeks now which is awesome. Well, Mom I think I'm turning out to be like you, for the life of me I can't remember what went on this week, lol. Hmmm we ate at Dennys for dinner one night with less active which went good. Barstow has finally cooled down for a few days it was only in the 90's which was awesome and now it only gets up to 106 which is better than 118 so that's nice. Other than that though nothing much has happened this week. I love ya'll very much.
Love Elder Brough

Aug 30th

Well this week was a little slow I guess you could say our baptism that we had set for the 4th is moved back to a later date yet to be decided due to she hasn't come to church yet. The other person a 85 yr old guy named Cole that we where going to set a date up with, he was pretty cool guy, he passed away early this past week due to cancer and some other difficulties so that was kinda of a bummer and at the same time not cause he is in a better place out of pain. Well I got to call Hawaii this week too, lol, we had a missionary from Victorville come up on exchanges with my roommate for the week and on Friday he wrecked on my bike and broke his collar bone so we spent most of the day in the hospital with him, and I called home to his mom to tell her what had happened, so that was interesting. Thursday I believe it rained like crazy so we got some flooding, who would a thunk that it would rain in Barstow. lol. Miss ya and love ya'all tons.

8-16-10

Here is his letter from this week.

Ya, I got your package finally, it got mixed up while we were moving, but I got it thanks. I loved the Wyoming key chain, and I got a kick out of Kia's little gift. ( Mandy's dog Kia had chewed on the water bottle I sent him) Maria, we couldn't meet with her this past week her grandpa had to go to the hospital due to cancer, but we are now going to be visiting her twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursday so it might actually be good. One of the less actives we are working with Amber, her husband is catholic, way cool guy, anyway they came to church a while back it was a bad Sunday for that, the whole meeting was on and about public affairs which really threw him off, so he wasn't going to be coming back. But later that same week he had a stroke, he has a heart condition, so the stroke was due to heat and stuff because he worked outside all day. After that they moved his job and schedule around so now he just drives people around and the best part he now has Sundays off so he can take his wife to church now, that was how she was going to get to church was by him taking her. Better yet we got to sit and talk with them for a little bit and he sat in for a short little object lesson we had. To our surprise he showed up and stayed for sacrament this past Sunday it was awesome, just goes to show ya that the lord works in mysterious ways. With killing the snakes ya we shoot them we got hold of a little BB gun pistol that we use to shoot them with, not anymore thought its gotten to hot. I will have to agree with Bishop on that one ( I told him Bishop told Sunday that Barstow is not Hell but you can see it from there) lol. We just have transfers this coming Tuesday but nothing is happening in Barstow we are all staying here. Love ya all tons

Well I have gotten behind again so I thought I would just summarize Kevin's last months e-mails. He is still serving in Barstow California. He says the temps have been from 105 to 118 during the days. He had to be on a bike for a little while so he really enjoyed it when the temp has finally come down to 100. He has killed 9 rattlesnakes to date, I really wish he wouldn't do that but he tells me he is safe. He has been working with a 19 year old girl named Maria. Other than that not much has been going on. He said he has been working with some less active people also. I will try to keep this up and Mandy's blog current from now on.

I did write and ask him if he was having any fun because he is never smiling. He said he is having a blast and I should know he never smiles. Oh well.

Butchering and Roasting a pig.

Beautiful California

I haven't been very good at keeping this up

Here is a little bit of what has been going on with Kevin. On May 24th he found out he was getting transferred, he sure wasn't very happy about it. He has really enjoyed serving with the Samoan people, but he did say it's the Lords call and he knows best.
This is from his May 31st letter. (Well I got sent to the wast land Barstow and it is way way to hot for me here it was over 80 at 9 o'clock and the AC doesn't really work at the apartment so umm yeah I'm more of a cold weather type a fellow. My Comp is from Montana Elder Wilcock. This week I have been doing a ton of service and meetings and driving cause last transfer my car was hit and the drivers side door is banged in. Well Barstow is just like you think it is a waste land out in the middle of nowhere I don't know why anyone would want to live out here, but o well it is an interesting place.)

Here is part of his June 7th letter:
I'll say one thing I'm most definitely not used to 100+ weather all day everyday and having the night be at 75 to 80+ it is way to hot luckily the AC works at the apartment now cause when I first got here it didn't and those were some long nights. This week has been pretty good all of our work is less active work here and that's alright.

Here is some of his letter from this week.

This week was long, we didn't get to do much missionary work cause I had to take other missionary's around everywhere, but yesterday made up for it we had Elder Robert D Hales came down and we had a Stake Conference with him speaking and then right after that all the missionary's there had a special meeting with him it was way sweet. I'll talk to ya in two weeks. I love you a ton.

Sorry I am so late in posting this, it has been a busy week.

Hey,
I hope Mandy does go on a Mission that would be way cool, yeah Skinny has been keeping me updated on how he has been doing, it kinda makes me homesick at times not being able to be there and run, but that alright when I get back I'll be tearing things up. I have a new companion, he is from Samoa his name is Elder Tausisi he is a cool guy, its a ton of fun. This week was really pretty slow cause we had transfers and so we were getting Elder Tausisi settled in and meet people and what not. We did have a baptism set up for this next Sunday after a special Stake Conference that we are having so I hope that is goes good, we have been trying to get him baptised for a while, he is ten but it should be good. The Stake Conference we are having Elder Robert D Hales is coming to talk, its going to be way neat to be there for that. I'll be singing with the choir for it too lol. I'm excited ti's going to be fun. I love and miss ya all lots.

Hey,
That's really neat that Ray ( Ray is Mandy's Boyfriend he leaves 4-14-10 for Chile) is going on a mission it's going to be really good. Sorry for not writing yesterday I was really busy with transfers and stuff, I'm still in the same area, the Samoan Ward its really good. One of the people I'm working with is a less active, his name is Sai Maiava (something like that) but he is the lead singer in a band called Sons of Manasseh you should look them up they are really good they sing reggae he is a way cool guy. The work has slowed down a little bit but its still doing good. I got an e-mail from Cody ( that's his cousin that is on his mission in the Philippines) which was cool. I sent one of my SD cards to you a while back so sense you all are still asking me for pics I don't think it made it sorry, I'll try to take more and send a CD or something next time. Glad to hear about Ryan that's really good ( we told Kevin about Ryan's last track meet) Well that's it for this week, I'll talk to ya all later I love you all very much.

Well this last week I asked him to send us a little more detail about what he is doing. Also I asked him about the earthquake and he didn't even respond about that so I guess he didn't really feel it. Well here is is letter.

Hey,
Well first , you know me and how I am not into saying much, and I can't think of much to say every week. So I am trying to say as much as I can, I guess I'll try to think of something else to say more about next time. I don't really have much time this time though. Sorry. Yeah I got to watch all of Conference it was really good, I liked Dieter, Monson and Holland a lot it was really good. No I haven't received your package yet. Nothing has happened this week it was a really slow week cause everyone left for conference and all so nobody was here to work with anyway ppl are waiting on me so I gotta go I love ya all a ton.

Well this week his letter was even shorter and less informative that any other. Basically he said there was some drama going on with one of the bishops but its alright, the work goes on and that is what really matters. Mandy had her stitches from her fingers removed, so Kevin said that was good and he is still praying for her.

3/8/10

Well some of Kevin's letter this past week was about Mandy and the trials she has been going through lately. Mandy recently had an accident with her blender coming apart and her hand got caught in the blades, she now has 35 stitches in her two fingers and is in a lot of pain. She also just a couple of weeks ago had a questionable mole removed from her forearm and it did not turn out good so she had to go back and have a bigger chunk taken out. So needless to say she has had a few trials lately. Anyway here is a summary of what was in his letter.

Last Sunday we got two more baptismal dates set up, one is a nine year old boy, he is one smart kid he remembers everything that we teach him and is on top of everything he is way cool. The other is a young lady that is graduating High School this year both are doing really well and are excited to be baptised, it is way way cool.
Well I'm praying for you all and hope that everything will be OK with Mandy. Love and miss ya all

March 1st letter

Well, his e-mail didn't come until this morning, I sure wish they could figure out why the e-mail is so slow. His e-mail was so short all he had to tell us was that, he has gained some weight, and the California roads are very different to drive on. He said he has a Wedding and a Baptism this weekend and he is really busy and short on time. I hope he writes more next month and I can't wait to get a few pics. Well at least we know he is alive and doing good. Thank you to everyone for your prayers and support for him we really appreciate it as a family.

2- 22-10

I love hearing how good he is doing, he always makes me smile. In case you are just joining us in reading this, yes he is still in Southern California, I know it sounds like he is somewhere else, he is learning Tongan right now to help him understand the Polynesian people better.

Talofa

Everything is going good, two of our investigators who have been living with their girlfriends for the past little while are getting married, one this up and coming weekend and the next one will be next month some time, they haven't set a date yet we will find out this week, then we can set up baptismal date with him, but it is awesome. We will be having at least two more baptisms this next month which will be awesome. Yesterday there was a cat fight during Sunday School one of our investigators an older lady in like her 40's or somewhere around there ( I need to inform him that 40's is not old!!!!!!!!) and a pregnant Mori (New Zealand native) barbarian warrior lady went at it, it was pretty funny. That's the way Polynesians are, could be fighting and throwing it down one moment and then turn around and feed you the next like nothing happened. I love these people they are so awesome. Love and miss ya.

The mission home either emails it doesn't matter what you write to though but this is the one I'll be using from now on ( I had noticed he changed his e-mail address so I was asking him what one to use. His new one is kevin.brough@myldsmail.net use this one when you want to e-mail him.) The baptism went really well we had a bunch of people show up for it, we had to dunk the guy three times cause of how tall he is but that was alright, and we had a bunch of food afterwards so it was really good. We have also set another baptism for next month with a guy, the only thing holding him back is that he isn't married to his girlfriend yet so we are trying to get that figured out first, so that should hopefully be happening next month though. The weather has been really nice down here it's been nice and sunny with the temp. in the 70's and such. The area I'm in is a car area sense we cover the whole San Bernardino Valley including Redlands so we are driving around a bunch. Everything is going great and we are hoping to see a few more people this week and to set some dates with them, so things are really going well. Love y'all.

We have been busy this last week with getting new investigators a lot of them are good, about all of them came to church yesterday which was awesome. We also were invited to a Seventh Day Church on Saturday by one of our new investigators, so we went it was interesting to say the least lol. We have also been preparing for a baptism this up coming weekend on the 13th which will be really awesome. So all has been good here and busy the work goes on. Love you all tons.

That's way cool that Ray got his call and he already knows Spanish so that's good ( Mandy's boyfriend Ray got his call to Rancagua Chile Mission). My new companion is Elder Latuli he is cool, he was born and raised in Samoa, so I just sit there and listen to him and everyone else talk not having any idea what is being said. LOL But it's all good and way fun. We have a baptism on the 13th with a way cool older couple and we will be having a few more coming up shortly so all is going awesome. I love you all tons.

Jan 25th 2010 Letter

I couldn't get to e-mail last week cause of Martin Luther King Day. So transfers were last Tuesday and I got transferred out and am now serving in the Rialto, 2nd/Inland Empire Samoan Wards, its pretty crazy I can't understand anything they are saying cause they are speaking Samoan in sacrament and a lot of the other time but its fun. We get fed at every appointment and its a lot of food too and it's good. Besides transfers nothing much is going on there are a few people we are meeting with that are progressing two of them will be baptized next month on the 13th, they are all way cool people. One of my mission leaders is a huge Samoan (well I guess most of the Samoans are pretty big lol) but he Brother Faimalo is one of those big scary looking Samoan that are way tough, he used to be a gangster running the streets of LA along with one of the councilors in the bishopric they are all way cool guys though, they are awesome. All last week it has been blowing and raining like crazy all the streets were flooded it was nuts, and there was a tornado warning around us a little bit. My new area covers the whole valley and even a little outside of the mission into Redlands so we go down there every now and then. All is good and the work continues to progress. Love ya'all tons.

Kevin also wrote and said that anyone can e-mail him. kevin_bruff@myldsmail.com But he would rather have letters sent to him because he dosen't have alot of time to read e-mails and answer them.

Thank you to everyone for supporting him. It means alot to us as a family.

Jan, 11, 2010 Letter

To start with let me just say that I was telling him about our cold weather here. It has been in the -20 here this past week.

Here is his letter:
Wish it was that cold here. lol The weather has been nice its been in the 70's pretty much everyday, high 70's a few times it's crazy. We are still working with the Davies, the family I told you about and they are doing awesome they came to church this last Sunday, and they stayed for the first two blocks it was awesome. We had to give talks in Sacrament and they went really well the spirit was really strong. It was amazing cause there is this one guy named Eric that is married to my Mission Ward Leaders sister so they have been working on him for about 15 years, he isn't a member but he has been coming to church for a long time and he reads and prays like all the time, anyway these past few months he has been really softening up he is one of those few people that when they say they do something that they are going to do it, when he makes a commitment he takes it really seriously. He knows its all true and all that, he just wants to make sure its what he really wants and to make sure that he is ready before he makes such a big commitment. After church was over his brother-in-law, the Ward Mission Leader, and his home teacher decided that they were going to go over and ask him to take the discussions, so they were getting ready to head over when Eric's wife sent a txt saying don't come over its a bad time, so Brother Heywood (the brother-in-law) and Eric's home teacher decided to pray about it to see if they should still go over or not and right after their prayer they jumped up and said "we are going to do it". They went over and when Eric's wife opened the door she she was like what are you donin? I said not to come over it's a bad time, but then Eric showed up and he was like I can't believe you are here I was thinking about calling the Missionaries myself to tell them I was ready and he was sobbing and hugging them. It's amazing it was a miracle so we are figuring out a time to meet with him, he is away a lot due to his work schedule. So we are going to go start teaching him it's way cool how things work.
Things are going really good right now I'm so glad I could be apart of it.
I love ya'all

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!! Hope ya'all had a good one. I'm doing well. We only have two investigators and they are a less-active, part member family named the Davies they are way cool, the mother Susan, her dad is a Baptist preacher who lives in Oklahoma so when we first started with them she had a bunch of anti stuff that we had to work with but now have been working with them for a while and everything is going really really well they are progressing they were going to go to church this last Sunday but she got sick and the weren't able to make it. The dad, Dave, he is a less active member and he has a way strong testimony of the church it has blessed his life greatly, and their son Matt who is the other one that we are working with is way cool he is 15 and will be turning 16 here shortly, him and his mother are both black belts. They are a wonderful family. Besides that we are doing a ton of biking and tracting which is good I get to meet a lot of different and interesting people and a lot of different religions and all I have to say is that life is a lot different outside of little old Star Valley lol. I have also learned that the church is still true even in Southern California.
I love you all tons,

I decided that this would be a good way to keep everyone updated on Kevin's Mission I noticed Corrie had done this for Cody and I really liked it so I hope she dosen't mind I stole her idea.

We talked to Kevin on Christmas and everything was going well for him, he is in Hesperia California it is just North of San Bernardino, it was 70 degrees that day and he said it was hot. He is hoping to be in the mountain area come summer. He is on a bike. He has had 3 baptisms, he also has done one conformation he said he was nervous but it went well. Here is his last e-mail he sent.
